family medicine had it’s highest match rate ever
according to the NRMP, 91.4% of all family medicine positions were filled making this the highest fill rate ever for the field.
in addition, 75 more spots were offered this year.

the article, here, suggests this may be a ‘tide turning’ with a shift of student interest in favor of primary care.
i’d like to think so too, but im not so sure. if you look at the graph, you’ll see that the positions filled is fairly stable. and then the blue line shows a decrease in positions offered nearly every year. ten years ago, there were 3300 spots and now there is 2600. keep on decreasing the spots open but continue to have the same number of fillings; no doubt you’ll start to see a higher fill percentage.
i’ll wait to see next years results to get a better idea of the trend. it would be cool if the field could get back to 3300 spots for family medicine. we always here this talk about a shortage of primary care doctors but how are we going to fix it if we don’t train more doctors in the field?
